Prompt 3: Leaps

You don’t have to go
vaulting off a cliff,
wincing at the crunch of every bone
to come back down to earth.
Sometimes breaking yourself
does nothing more than
scatter your pieces
into crevices obscure,
leaving you with nothing.
It’s okay to take a small hop
towards where you’re going.
A leap is still a leap
even if it doesn’t end
with a crash landing and flames.
The wind only blows ashes away
to a home you never had.
You can even
stay in one place until
you know which direction to go.
Pause for a breath,
to give your life the best of you,
before you take one step
in front the other.
At least if you keep walking forward
someday when you’re ready
it becomes
A launch towards the stars
to hang there a while,
or a bound off that cliff
to crash into the ocean.
A leap is still a leap
the day you decide
to take it.
