#Preptober Days 15 and 16

For the sake of staying caught up, I'm combining these two days - Cast Your Villain(s) and Cast Your Seconds. I'm thrilled to introduce you all to the remaining cast of "Edge of Glory."

Day 16 – Cast Your Villain(s)

The banes of Lindsay’s existence are her mother, Mary, and stepfather, Jeff. Both addicts, both abusive towards each other and to Lindsay. It’s no wonder why Lindsay is constantly out of the house. These two people love cocaine and any booze they can get their hands on, leaving Lindsay to basically raise herself.

Mary was pregnant with Lindsay and married Dagan Rowland when she was 18. She had a rough upbringing as it was, so adding a child to the mix complicated this. Lindsay only knows that her mother is helplessly strung out on drugs, drunk all the time, and unable to coherently be a parent. Mary’s idea of parenting is screaming at Lindsay when the teenage girl has been out of the house for three days avoiding the fights and violence. Lindsay can’t stand her own mother and has no residual sentimental feelings left for a woman who makes her want to disappear daily.

Jeff is a monster of a different kind. He’s also a drug addict, drinks all the time, is also a drug dealer, and there are whispers around town about his history as a sex offender, rumoured to prefer young girls. Lindsay’s friends know of this rumour. Rex and Harley, being a few years older, keep a close eye on her and try to keep her away from Jeff as much as possible, yet don’t know how to approach the fragile subject with Lindsay, since she’s already suicidal and on a dangerous edge of self-destruction as it is. Jeff has never been married and has no kids. Lindsay refuses to acknowledge him as a stepparent. He isn’t a dad of any kind to her, not after all his cruelty towards both her and her mother.

Lindsay’s mother is otherwise quiet, yet even while out of the house, Jeff ensures Lindsay’s silence by stalking and threats, unaware that she has two guy friends who will come to her rescue no matter what. He thinks he has rendered this 14-year old girl helpless.

But he’s about to find out differently, in a way no one sees coming.

Day 16 – Cast Your Seconds

Rex Thorne

Rex is an 18-year old metalhead, guitarist, party animal, and car fanatic who usually has girlfriend drama of some kind, is fiercely protective of his friends and is the tough guy of the group. His mother is an addict with an eating disorder, and his father is an alcoholic who routinely cuts her down into said disorder. Rex and Lindsay connect on the level of being from a broken home. He understands her in ways no one else does, that make each other feel safe from the daunting world.

Lindsay has known Rex since elementary school. There have only been a few years where they haven’t gone to the same school. Rex recently graduated, much to everyone’s surprise. He’s out to prove he isn’t the troubled guy with no future everyone seems to think he is. He especially wants to prove he is nothing like his father. He’s still around to help his mom and younger sister, Sarah, acknowledging that his mother is a victim of abuse, not the abuser. He has no relationship with his father.

While being outspoken, blunt, and at times loud, as well as a troublemaker, Rex is also compassionate when it counts, though his softer side isn’t often seen outside his small circle of friends. He knows a lot of people, but the number of people who truly know him is minimal.

Harley Nasrin

Also 18-years old, Harley is a punk rocker, bassist/guitarist, and a skater boy, from a middle-class, loving and close family who have taken in Rex, Sarah, and Lindsay as his non-biological siblings. Harley has only had one girlfriend, Theresa, which has become a rocky relationship over time.

He is a private person, non-confrontational, likes to let Rex beat people up while he stands back, and often serves the comic relief. Harley is the “Mom friend” of the group, often fretting and lecturing after receiving news of Rex and Lindsay’s latest shenanigans. He’s a good kid, never in trouble, doesn’t get into fights, and the only illegal thing he does is smoke weed, since he’s the son of a pair of hippies who are open-minded, ever accepting and always loving. His mother is a social worker and his dad is a college professor.

Harley graduated high school at the top of his class. He is highly intelligent, thoughtful and logical, and also has a love for literature. He gives great advice and is always willing to help out another human being.

Sarah Thorne

Lindsay’s best girlfriend and Rex’s 14-year old sister. The girls went to school together all through elementary and junior high before they both dropped out at the beginning of grade 10. Sarah still lives at home with her parents and struggles to keep up a facade of normalcy. Like her brother, she is a party animal. Yet she has a love for fashion, makeup and drumming, which she recently started learning via band class before leaving school.

Sarah, like her mother, suffers from an eating disorder, a victim of her living environment and the constant emotional abuse of her father. Her appearance has become an unhealthy obsession to her.

She and Lindsay are basically sisters despite being so different. Sarah tends to be boy-crazy whereas Lindsay stays away from guys. Lindsay likes to be unnoticeable in a crowd, though Sarah loves being in the spotlight anywhere they go. Yet at the heart of them both, they are both just trying to be normal teenagers in a chaotic world and seeking that normalcy in each other.

There it is…character introductions! Main character, antagonist, and seconds, all introduced in the first book and whose adventures will be followed more in the sequel. Enjoy!
